About the Topic

The ‘Three Signs‘, or the three ‘Characteristics’ in Buddhist teaching, are the nature of all things. This is a core teaching of Buddhism.

While science chases a ‘theory of everything’, Buddhism has a theory for everything – that is, all things that arise, have the characteristic of being impermanent, suffering and non-self.

These three characteristics are not as obvious as one might think. Yes, everything is impermanent, but the Greeks worked that out thousands of years ago. Why should it be important to a meditator? And all things are Suffering … ? Really? What about the beautiful things in the world? And then all things are non-self – what can that mean, and how does it help you do meditation?

Jeff will tackle these core teachings in his usual practical way, based on the experience in Insight Meditation

The original teaching (sutta), from 2500 years ago is, in usual Buddhist style, short and pithy. Jeff’s art is to take these original teachings and make them relevant and practical:

Monday 13th : The Sign of Impermanence

SABBE SANKHARA ANICCA’TI
YADA PANYAYA PASSATI
ATHA NIBBINDATI DUKKHE
ESA MAGGO VISSUDHIYA
ALL STATES ARE IMPERMANENT
WHO SEES THIS WITH WISDOM
TIRES OF SUFFERING
THIS IS THE PATH OF PURIFICATION

Tuesday 14th : The Sign of Suffering

SABBE SANKHARA DUKKHA’TI
YADA PANYAYA PASSATI
ATHA NIBBINDATI DUKKHE
ESA MAGGO VISSUDHIYA
ALL STATES ARE SUFFERING
WHO SEES THIS WITH WISDOM
TIRES OF SUFFERING
THIS IS THE PATH OF PURIFICATION

Wednesday 15th : The Sign of Non-Self

SABBE DHAMMA ANATTA’TI
YADA PANYAYA PASSATI
ATHA NIBBINDATI DUKKHE
ESA MAGGO VISSUDHIYA
 ALL NATURE IS NON-SELF
WHO SEES THIS WITH WISDOM
TIRES OF SUFFERING
THIS IS THE PATH OF PURIFICATION
