About the Speaker & Topic

Hans van Willenswaard was born in the Netherlands; He is a cultural worker by profession, trained in Amsterdam and later at Emerson College in England. As part of his first job in the early 70’s in a Youth Center which had been turned into a ‘meditation center’ he started organizing programmers on Buddhism. He became a volunteer at the Theravada temple in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, and took the Three Refuges in 1979. During a ‘Dhama Tour’ and group pilgrimage in that same period, He visited Thailand for the first time. In the Netherlands he assisted organizing Vipassana meditation courses conducted by the resident Thai monk. From 1990 to 2000 he acted as the Secretary of the Dutch chapter of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, now known as Religions for Peace. He helped his wife Wallapa to found in 2001 Suan Nguen Mee Ma publishing house, a social enterprise also running Suksit Siam bookshop. The bookshop was established by Ajarn Sulak Sivaraksa more than 40 years ago. He became a board member of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB). In 2007 He organized the Third International Conference on Gross National Happiness (‘GNH3′) in Nongkhai, Wat Hin Mak Peng, and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. At present he organizes a platform for dialogue on Gross National Happiness as part of the Sufficiency Economy programme of the Thailand Research Fund (TRF).

The WBU shares the same building with the WFB (World Fellowship of Buddhists), and can be found by our maps below. It is on the third floor. The WBU is open most office hours, and the building can be entered from the rear of the building from the Soi. The front gate that faces the park is generally locked, but there is access to walk through to the rear.
