Zen 101 – What is Zen? with Joe Shakarchi

The talk on 24 February will cover the basics of Zen philosophy and practice, especially for those with little or no background in Zen. What is the history of Zen? How is Zen different from Theravada? How does Zen view the “three seals” of impermanence, suffering, and no self? What is the Zen view of the Four Noble Truths? Why is meditation so central to Zen?   We’ll also talk about why Zen uses illogic, paradox and humor, and how Zen uses poetry, stories and art as teaching tools.  This will not be a lecture so much as a group discussion. Please bring your own ideas and questions about Zen.

Inviting
Everyone is welcome, from beginners to experienced meditators. We meet to support and encourage each other in our practice.

Price
As is usual with Buddhist teachings, there is no charge for this event. However, the Little Bangkok Sangha follows the Buddhist custom of Dana (generosity). The teachings and the venue are offered as an act of generosity, and those receiving them can, if they wish, reciprocate by making donations. These go towards the venue’s costs.
