‘Cappuccino Club’

mother's day cartoonEschewing the usual Dhamma Talk format, sometimes we like to meet for a more open discussion of the principles of Buddhism and meditation as they relate to ‘real’ life – how we deal as humans with the various issues of daily life.  Topics can be anything, so feel free to suggest a topic yourself. We meet for coffee, chat and gentle philosophising on what it means to bring the lofty ideas of Buddhism into practical living.

You don’t have to be an expert in anything except staying alive – so feel free to come along and join in. Try to do the ‘homework’ (below) first though, so we have a launch point for discussion.

Topic: Relationship with Parents

On the occasion of Thailand’s celebration of Mother’s Day, Monday Aug. 12, our ‘Cappuccino Club’ will meet to discuss the relationships we have with our own mothers in the light of Buddhist teachings (which are pretty thin on the subject of mothers and filial relationships in general).

There is literature on how Buddhism might be helpful for mothers and parenting, but our topic is YOUR relationship with YOUR mother.  Did she encourage independence or dependence? Do you approve of each other or criticise? And do your parents understand your interest in meditation?

Have you modeled your own parenting on your mother’s example?  Does non-attachment mean non-attachment from family ties?  We can also consider the example of the Buddha in the way he related to his own mother and the mother of his child.  And how about the Buddha’s insistence on ‘gratitude to parents’?

This meeting won’t be a therapy session (promise), but more of a chance to discuss how important parental relations are in regards to the practise. Or even, how good of an opportunity parental relations are as a time to practise!

For the diligent, here is a PDF collection of some of the suttas that mention relationship with parents.
