Grahame White

Grahame WhiteGrahame got involved in Dharma in the early 1970s, and got hooked. He was even a monk for a while in Bodh Gaya – the place of the Buddha’s own enlightenment. He’s been involved with dhamma ever since, especially in Burma in the rigorous Mahasi Sayadaw tradition.

He is one of the key teachers in Vipassana Hawaii together with Steven Smith and Michele McDonald (both of whom we have hosted in Bangkok) where he still goes several times a year. He has that down-to-earth Australian quality, and his meetings are always as fun as they are informative. Full bio and an interview with him can be found here on the website from where he is running his current courses in Australia.

In support through the day will be Pandit Bhikkhu.

Getting to Know Your (non)Self

Vipassana meditation means ‘insight’ – it develops the method of observing yourself in real time, which sparks certain insights, and your way of being starts to change. One of the key insights is your ‘self’. Your thoughts and ideas, which seem so personal in normal life, when you experience them arising all by themselves and banging on your mind in meditation, suddenly are seen as not your self – they are operating by their own laws and kamma. If you are not your thoughts, then maybe you are the physical body? But you don’t feel diminished when your hair is cut, or your skin replaces itself every 35 days. Maybe you are your feelings then – the sensitivity. But even that you can see arising and passing away.

In this manner keen meditators investigate this sense of ‘self’ the ‘person-pack’ (sakayaditthi) directly in their own experience. This workshop will involve some sitting, walking and eating meditation around this theme of investigating (dhamma-vijaya). All in Grahame’s fun loving and down-to-earth style.

May Kaidee’s Oasis

may-holding-cookbook-sm

May is world famous for her vegetarian and vegan Thai cooking school – she even teaches in Russia, Czech Republic and New York! Her cooking books are big sellers too. We’ve had some great group lunches at one of her restaurants in the past. Now she has a new place, hidden away from all but the real locals. May Kaidee’s Oasis.

It is a bit tricky to get to, but that makes it all the more worthwhile. And we’ll be making this one of our regular venues, so it is worthwhile getting on your radar. Being hidden away there is no roaring traffic noise. Though there might be some building noise from nearby – good for mindfulness and patience!

We will have the two storey Thai-style house to ourselves.

To make it easy, we will meet up at the Mai Kaidee restaurant near Kao San Road, and then walk over to the Oasis as a group. If you are driving, see further down for the exact location.

Booking

If you’d like to book for this event please enter your details below – and do double check them as many people enter the wrong details and then wonder why no one got back to them with confirmation. After booking below you confirm your place by dropping the 600 baht fee in at any of our regular events before the date. There’s plenty of space – we don’t anticipate being over booked.

If you would like to join but are short of funds, let us know, and we’ll arrange a free place for you.

After entering your details you will be returned to this page and someone will get back to you within a day or two. Your details won’t appear on the web page.

If the workshop is full :(required)

The Oasis Location

While we are keen to keep this place secret, if you are driving, and looking to park your car near the venue, you can find it by the maps below. Here is a wide area view, and a closer view. Note the road does not go right up to the Oasis so you will want to park around Mahanop Road (I’ll work on the maps a bit more when time permits)

  1. Will be back on October 5th … will Graham still be around then ? would love to meet him 😉 after the 5th of course .. have to get over jet lag first … lol

  2. Keep an eye on the calendar. Currently I’m planning to be in Rayong with Grahame on retreat. Possibly we’ll do something on the Sunday evening, but as he’s leaving the next day it might be a bit much for him.
