Normally we think that a precept is a kind of a rule or a law.  But from the point of view that will be presented in the talk, a precept is a suggestion for spiritual practice.  When a precept is not taken to follow blindly but is taken as a suggestion for spiritual practice, it is much more challenging.  It is a constant daily questioning and inquiry: what is this precept for me today, and how do I participate in it directly and indirectly. In this way, the precepts become a tool for growth and development.
