If you were around about last November you will probably have met British Bhikkhuni ordained in the Tibetan tradition, Ani Zamba. Something of a hit with our community here, we invited her back to Bangkok.
Timing has worked out a little difficult, but we will be holding several events with her from 11th – 16th August, at various venues.
Ani Zamba has a vigorous style of teaching, entertaining, absorbing and with lots of metta.
You can hear some of Ani Zamba’s previous teachings podcasted here. Her main website, much of it in Portuguese as she is based in Brazil, is www.anizamba.org
The reason for the advance notice of her visit is the New Life Foundation in Chiang Rai will be holding a meditation weekend retreat with her. This centre is very nice – simple rooms, but each yogi gets a private room/bathroom. Set in the countryside where the temperature is pretty cool at night, and with an open air sala, it’s a pretty ideal place for retreat. Our very own Jabu will be leading Yoga sessions also.
Please contact the NLF directly as directed below.

Mindfulness Retreat with Bikkhuni Zamba Chozom 18 – 21 August
New Life Foundation is organizing a retreat with Ani Zamba, one of the world’s well-known Buddhist nuns. The retreat will start on the 18th of August at 19h and end on the 21st at 17h. Thai translation will be available.
Our guest, Ven. Bikkkuni Zamba Chozom, has numerous centers and groups around the world where she has been teaching for the past 37 years. She had the opportunity to study under some of the greatest meditation masters of the last century not only from the Tibetan but also Thai, Burmese, Korean and Chinese traditions of Buddhism. Her approach is very scientific, dynamic and interactive- not particularly religious , as she focuses on our “perception” and how it works to condition our experience of life. “If we understand why we see things in certain ways, we’ll understand how we can change our experience of life-we can be our own psychotherapist healing all our neurotic tendencies and so removing the conditions that result in our dissatisfaction, confusion and suffering.”
“Using our confusion as our path to awakening” will be the main topic of the retreat. We are going to examine the way we see life’s changing conditions. Analyzing the way we see things is very revealing and liberating: we see how we can take full responsibility for changing our lives and have the tools needed to do it! Do we really seek freedom? And what is it we seek freedom from? What is it that limits our perception?
Retreatants have a single room each, with shower, bed, sheets, towel and fan. Vegetarian meals are served, with a light meal in the evening for those who need it. The retreat will include teachings and guided meditation practice, yoga with an experienced teacher, swimming pool and herbal steam bath are at everyone’s disposition. Cost is 2000 baht per person. Please spread the word and bring some friends.
For those who don’t know New Life yet: it is an international recovery community, located amidst the hills and lakes of Chiang rai, Northern Thailand. This community provides the best possible environment for healing body and mind: mindfulness practice, which forms the heart of our recovery program, nature therapy as well as a choice of many different types of group and individual activities.

That was a vey good series of talks Ani gave in Bangkok (Aug 11-18). The retreat in Chiangrai was well-attended with many people coming from Chiangmai and Bangkok and was extended with two days, so many of us ended up staying from Thur eve to Wed morning (Aug 18-24) at the New Life Foundation. I found the teachings to be very clear and useful for daily life and we got to know many different techniques for meditation.
Excellent – thanks for the report. Any photos?
I think they invited Ani back up there for October.
