The Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s Life in Tibet: His Writings, His Discoveries, and His Training With His Teacher… A Community Talk by Nalanda Translation Committee translator Scott Wellenbach.

This evening’s presentation will touch on the Gesar tradition and explore themes from the early writings and discoveries of VCTR with a focus on his training with his teacher, Khenpo Gangshar, and its influence on his presentatio…n of the Buddha dharma in the West.

Scott is a long-time student of the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and has studied extensively with Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He first met the Vidyadhara in the winter of 1974 during Rinpoche’s teaching tour of East-coast universities. Later that year, he hitch-hiked up the Pan-American highway from the Panama Canal to attend the first summer of Naropa Institute. He received refuge vows from the Vidyadhara in 1975 and bodhisattva vows in 1976, when he moved to Boulder. He began his study of Tibetan and Sanskrit at Naropa in 1976 and became adjunct language faculty in 1978.

Scott joined the Nalanda Translation Committee in 1978 and became its first employee in 1984. His first project with the translation committee was The Rain of Wisdom, for which he served as co-translator and co-editor. In 1986 he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he now resides. In addition to his work with the committee, he serves as the Dean of Translation and Language Study at Nitartha Institute. A senior teacher in both the Shambhala and Nitartha mandalas, he has a particular interest in joining the Buddhist view to meditation practice in a transformative way.
